Work in Germany. Guide for jobseekers
The German labour market attracts Poles with attractive salaries, availability of many interesting job offers and the possibility of professional development. These most interesting job offers are addressed mainly to people who know foreign languages well (mainly German), but also Poles who do not have the required language skills can find many interesting offers on the German labor market.
Working in Germany - why there?
The German labour market has been open to Poles since 1 May 2011 and offers both permanent and temporary employment without the need for a permit. Another argument in favor of working in Germany are very attractive wages, which encourage even weekend trips, so you can quickly repair your home budget. Importantly, the minimum hourly rate proposed is EUR 8.5, which is incomparably higher than the equivalent rate available in the country. Working in Germany is also an excellent opportunity to have contact with a foreign language, which is particularly beneficial for those who find it a barrier to communication. Taking up employment abroad is also a unique opportunity to learn about foreign cultures, customs and traditions, and above all, a chance to develop your career and improve your skills. A huge benefit of working and living in Germany is also the social security, which is considered one of the best in Europe, which guarantees every employee a child benefit (also if they live in Poland). Within the framework of well-developed social infrastructure, there is also an unemployment benefit - it can be granted to persons who were employed in Germany for at least 12 months in the period preceding the loss of their job.
Working in Germany - where to start?
If you are a citizen of the European Union, it is a good idea to start looking for a job by visiting the nearest job centre. You will be able to fill in the relevant documents on site and arrange a meeting with an official to register the candidate in the database and take steps to facilitate legal employment, additional training or the completion of professional qualifications. Ausbildung is a very popular form of education, which in combination with practical activities is a great way to complement the education.
Where to look for ads?
There are many proven sources of job advertisements to help you find interesting job offers:
- newspapers and magazines - announcements are often available in daily newspapers, weekly and monthly magazines, as well as in special editions of individual newspapers. Job offers for highly qualified positions can be found in magazines such as: The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Die Welt or Süddeutsche Zeitung. The local press, Westdeutsche Zeitung and Berliner Zeitung, is also a very useful source. If you are looking for a job that matches your education, knowledge and skills, you can also post your own advertisement for an additional fee;
- Employment office - local employment offices have a wide range of advertisements and, most importantly, access to them is free of charge. Most of them concern jobs that do not require special qualifications;
- Internet - in recent years there has been a rapid development of the online labour market, which is very popular especially among young people. The websites make it quick and easy to find offers that meet precisely defined criteria such as job title, sector, region or preferred salary level;
- Employment agencies - most of them specialise mainly in temporary job offers, which can be a great way to gain first work experience and a stage before finding a permanent job;
- Job fairs - bring together many employers operating in one sector. Usually, participation in the fair involves the need to send a CV in advance, from which employers invite only selected persons to the event. During the fair you can, among others, talk to HR specialists, learn about employment prospects in various companies, and make an appointment for job interviews;
- direct application - in case of people who have specific plans and professional aspirations connected with a given company, a good way to find a job is to send application documents directly to the company's address.
Working without language skills - is it possible?
At present it is not difficult to find an attractive job without language skills. One of the most popular activities is seasonal fruit and vegetable harvesting, which usually lasts from June to October. In this case, the temporary employment agencies start looking for employees at the beginning of the year. Poles who do not speak the language can also take up employment in construction and repair services or as carers of children and the elderly. There are always a lot of such advertisements, so there should be no problem finding a job. There are also other, more attractive job offers, e.g. for IT specialists, but they have a chance to find an interesting job only if they speak German at least to a communicative degree.
Unlimited employment opportunities
Although it is possible to work in Germany without speaking the language, those for whom it is not a problem can expect more attractive job offers, higher salaries and opportunities for personal development. Poles who would like to have a professional future in this country should learn the language at least to a communicative degree, so that they will become much more valuable candidates in the labour market. This skill also allows you to search for interesting offers, prepare necessary recruitment documents, arrange formalities and direct contact with potential employers. Candidates who are fluent in a foreign language may also freely negotiate salary and other conditions of employment.
